Sport

As well as ensuring that our young people have a rounded curriculum and access to outstanding teaching in all subjects, the Academy has a focus on Sport as one of two specialisms (the other being Science).

Since opening in September 2009, we have enjoyed a number of outstanding successes in both areas and to outline this, the Academy's PE Dept have put together the following information outlining how this continued in 2010 - 2011.

PE and Sport Achievement Award

The Academy have been awarded a PE and Sport Achievement Award in Bradford, which recognises our progress in sport as a school. This is particularly a reward for the PE Dept who have worked hard to develop provision at the Academy, for example the introduction of Outdoor Education, extra curricular activities and clubs and a year of many outstanding sporting achievements.

Bradford Schools Champions

On 24 May 2011, the Academy's Year 8 rugby league team made the short journey to Odsal Stadium to take their place in the final of the Bradford Schools' Chamiponship. The team earned their place in the final the having finished second in the league phase of the chamionship suffering only one defeat, that being to Thornton Grammar School, their opponents in the final.

The team were confident heading into the final having beaten Oakbank School 54-0 in the semi final and were keen to set the record straight following their earlier defeat at the hands of Thornton earlier in the season. The two teams were clearly the best in the competition and did not disappoint the lrage number of spectators attending to cheer on both schools and with the scores tied at 18-18 heading into the final few minutes, it appeard that extra time would be needed to decide the winner. However, with just three minutes to go, Tevin Campbell scored under the posts to make Appleton Academy the champions of Bradford!

Other scorers on the day were Andrew Scott, Coby Kittsen and Jordan Payton, with the goals converted by Matthew Quinn.

Cheerleading

2010 - 2011 was a great year for the Academy's Cheerleading team - the All Stars. Firstly, the team achieved a second place finish in the Bradford Schools Cheerleading Competition, successfully qualifying for the West Yorkshire Youth Games Cheerleading Finals at Leeds Met Carnegie University.

The team prepared hard, working long hours to perfect routines after school, often practicing five nights per week to ensure their routine would be the best. We are happy to say that that hard work paid off and the team was successfully crowned champions, beating off string competition from 8 other schools to be recognised as the best school team in West Yorkshire!

Trampolining

The trampolining team were a newly assembled team of young people, which entered the Bradford & Leeds Trampolining Competition and had great success.

The commitment to training by young people was outstanding, with work going into the competition from September onwards. As a result, the team managed to walk away with one trophy, three gold medals, three silver medals and ten bronze medals.

Inter District Sailing Regata

Young people fro the Academy represented Doe Park and Bradford in the inter district sailing regatta, which took place on Tuesday 4 July 2011. The team was made up of nine girls from Year 7 and Year 9 and although some had sailed before, for many this was their first experience.

Students received a five hour training course prior to the event and worked hard to get to grips with what would be expected of them during the competition. The results they achieved were fantastic with two first places in their class, two second places, a third place, two fourth places and a top eight finish.

Thanks to this fantastic collective effort, the Doe Park/Appleton Bradford District team were crowned overall winners!

Bradford Leadership Academy

Eight of the Academy's Year 9 students have been selected to become part of the South Bradford Leadership Academy; they are - Jamie Lee Pemberton, Charley Illingworth, Ella Jardine, Morgan Morley, Lucy Wilby, Lisa Addy, Melissa Turner and Amy Marsh.

All of these girls have demontsrated outstanding qualities to get to this point and will receive training as sports leaders as well as a certificate of achievement from the 'Step into Sport' initiative.

Army Community Challenge

Appleton Academy once again took part in the Army Community Challenge on Staurday 9 April 2011, the second time the school have comepted in the competition.

Having won the competition in 2010 at the first attempt, the team this year had a lot to live up to and they did not disappoint. Competing against other schools, youth and community groups and Army Cadets from across Yorkshire in a number of activities including: mountain biking, archery, paintballing, an obstacle course and a general knowledge quiz, the team once again proved themselves to be the best on the day and once again brought the winners trophy back to Appleton Academy.

Swimming Club

The Academy launched its first ever Key Stage 3 swimming club this year and took part in the Bradford Swimming Gala during the summer term. Despite being the first competition the school has ever entered in this discipline, the Academy managed to have an indivisual winner in one of the reces and will look to build on that performance in 2011 - 2012 with the extension of the club to incorporate both Key Stage 3 and 4.
