Tomlinson House ‘Believing in Achieving’ This is the motto for Tomlinson House, as created by Duane West, it epitomises everything the pupils of Tomlinson stand for and are working towards. The idea that every one of us must believe we are capable of achieving great things is held deep by the students and staff. Our underlying ethos of support and aspiration drives us all to reach our goals, and encourages our pupils to aim higher. Jane Emily Tomlinson, CBE, was born on the 21st February 1964 and passed away on 3rd September 2007. She was an amateur English athlete who became well known in the United Kingdom for raising £1.85 million for charity by completing a series of athletic challenges, despite suffering from terminal cancer. As well as being known primarily for her amazing athletic achievments, Jane Tomlinson was also a specialist paediatric radiographer for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Jane qualified in 1993 as a Diagnostic Radiographer with the Diploma of Radiography (DCR(R)) from the Leeds College of Health, later to become part of the University of Leeds. She soon moved into her specialism of Paediatrics where she remained throughout her treatment, continuing to work, whilst taking time off to undertake her sporting challenges. In order to work as a Radiographer, Jane studied Biology, Physics, Care of the Patient, Anatomy and Physiology, Radiographic Imaging Processes and Equipment, highlighting not only that Jane was a terrific exponent of sport but also science! The pupils and staff of Tomlinson House actively support the work done by Jane through a variety of different fund raising activities. This year we aim to raise money through donations and sporting competitions. All the money raised by Tomlinson House will be donated to the ‘Jane Tomlinson Appeal’ http://www.janetomlinsonappeal.com/ “Jane’s extraordinary journey has made her an inspiration not just to cancer suffers or fellow athletes, but to anyone facing hardship in their lives.” (The Pride of Britain Awards, 2005) Gordon Brown described her as an “inspiration to millions around the world” and paid tribute to her “amazing spirit”
