Health and safety

A Safe and Healthy Academy

The Academy actively promotes a healthy approach to life. This provides children and young people with the confidence, skills and understanding to make healthy food and lifestyle choices.

Active learning is encouraged through a stimulating and varied outdoor environment with a range of equipment provided during break times. Older children and young people act as buddies to promote positive social relationships and team games.

Children and young people have a minimum of two hours of PE led by our P.E specialist teachers, a sports coach and class teachers. The additional sports hall is well used by both the children and young people and the local community. Breakfast club and clubs outside academy hours provide a fun and active range of learning experiences.

Healthy and nutritious school dinners are freshly prepared on the premises. Advice is available regarding healthy options for lunch boxes.

Accidents

We have trained first aid staff in the academy. In the case of injury, children and young people are well looked after until we can contact parents if it is necessary to get the appropriate medical attention.

Medicines

If your child requires regular medication, for example, asthma inhalers, please talk to a member of the year group team. If your child is prescribed a course of medicine it is preferable that you administer it at home. Medication will only be accepted in the Academy if it has been prescribed by a doctor and complete written and signed instructions are obtained from parent/carer, including written medical authority if the medicine needs to be altered (e.g. crushing of tablets).

Safe recruitment procedure

The safer recruitment procedures are followed in the employment of all academy staff. All adults who work at Appleton Academy officially or on a voluntary basis are required to have full CRB clearance.
