Admissions

Appleton Academy Admission Arrangements 2010-2011

Thank you for considering sending your child to the Appleton Academy. This guidance is to help you make an informed choice for your child and understand the admissions process and the admissions over-subscription criteria. The Appleton Academy does not select pupils on the basis of ability or aptitude, but does have specialist teaching and provision for sports and the sciences.

The Appleton Academy has three points of entry:

            Nursery
            Reception [primary]
            Year 7 [secondary]

All applications for places at the Appleton Academy must be made on your Local Authority’s co-ordinated admission forms – the Common Preference Form.

Bradford Local Authority’s forms are available from the Appleton Academy, local libraries, other schools in Bradford and from Education Bradford.

If you live in another local authority area you will need to complete their Common Preference Forms.

Admission arrangements as the Appleton Academy builds to its full capacity

The Appleton Academy will open on 1 September 2009 with a Nursery of 52 FTE and Published Admission Numbers relating to pupils in Reception Year (30) and Year 7 (165). Pupils in other years will have been transferred automatically from the predecessor schools – High Fernley Primary School and Wyke Manor School, which will both close on 31 August 2009. From September 2011, the admission number to the Reception Year will become 60.

External admission to year groups without a Published Admission Number will be based upon the size of teaching groups already existing in the Appleton Academy and will be conditional on the efficient use of resources and the scope to admit pupils to achieve full size classes.

If you wish to apply to have your child transferred into any year group other than Nursery, Reception of Year 7, please in the first instance contact the Academy Administration office.

These arrangements will be co-ordinated by the Local Authority, so parents will be required to complete an Education Bradford common application form. The Academy Trust will consider all such applications and if the year group applied for has a place available, admit the child unless one of the permitted reliefs applies. If more applications are received than there are places available, the oversubscription criteria shall apply.

Rights of appeal

There will be a right of appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel for external applicants refused admission.

NurseryAdmissions

Numbers

The Appleton Academy will admit up to 26 Full Time Equivalents [52 part-time pupils] aged between 2-5 into its Nursery Class in September 2010.

Note: Attendance at the nursery class does not guarantee admission to the Academy. A separate application must be made for transfer from the nursery to the primary phase of the Academy.

Nursery oversubscription criteria

Where the number of applications for admission is greater than the published admission number, applications will be considered against the criteria set out below:

a)   children in public care;

b)   admission of pupils whose sibling currently attends the Academy and who will continue to do so on the date of admission; [Note: The term ‘sibling’ includes all full siblings and legally adopted children, and also includes step-siblings and half-siblings resident at the same address.]

c)   admission of pupils on the basis of proximity to the Academy using a straight line measurement from the main entrance of the Academy [High Fernley site] to the main entrance to the child’s home.
