Welcome to Appleton Academy Secondary |
|
There are a lot of exciting changes being planned for the Secondary site from September 2010. Two of our exciting plans are outlined below. The launch of the House system in December based around our specialisms of Sport and Science (Goodall House, Tomlinson House, Hawking House and Hoy House) will be developed further with the launch of vertical tutoring. All learners in Year 7-11 will be in mixed aged tutorial groups that will meet together for half an hour each day. The huge benefits of this will be that older learners will be able to act as mentors and support to younger learners. The social benefits of mixed age tutoring are in developing a positive climate for learning and a stronger sense of community. The tutorial programme will be based upon PSHCE and have develop literacy and numeracy.
Appleton Academy will also open its doors to Post 16 students for the first time in September 2010. Although we are starting small with provision for 40 students, our 6th form will grow and eventually have places for 200 learners. Despite the small start we are committed to offering as wide a range of course as possible for this year, with Sports and Science being offered at Level 3 BTEC. There are also courses in English, History, Geography, RE, Product Design and ICT. New subjects like Psychology and Law are also offered.
