September 2027 - Secondary Admissions to Year 7

The transition to secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we look forward to welcoming prospective Year 7 students and their families to Appleton Academy.

Our Open Evening for students who are due to start Year 7 in September 2027 will take place on Tuesday 13 October 2026, between 5.00pm and 7.00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore our excellent facilities, meet our dedicated staff and students, and learn more about our values, curriculum, and wider school community. Staff will be available throughout the evening to answer any questions and help you discover what makes Appleton Academy such a special place to learn and grow.

We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the Appleton Academy community.

Transition to Year 7 - September 2027

The journey from primary to secondary school begins when school places are allocated in March 2027. We understand that this can be both an exciting and sometimes daunting time for children and their families.

If you have chosen Appleton Academy for your child, we would like to thank you for placing your trust in us. We recognise that selecting the right secondary school is an important decision, and we are committed to making the transition process as smooth, positive and supportive as possible.

To help students settle confidently into Academy life, we work closely with our partner primary schools and provide a range of transition events and activities throughout the year. These opportunities are designed to help both students and parents become familiar with Appleton Academy, our staff, and the exciting opportunities that await them.

Please explore the information below, together with the wider content available across our website, to learn more about joining Appleton Academy.

Transition Day

All Year 6 students will be invited to attend Appleton Academy for a Transition Day on Wednesday 7 July 2027. This provides an opportunity to experience life at secondary school, become familiar with the Academy environment, and gain an insight into a typical school day.

Students will have the chance to meet current pupils, make new friends with other children joining the Academy, and spend time with members of their new form group. They will also be introduced to the key staff who will support them throughout their first days and weeks at Appleton Academy.

Transition Evening

On the evening of Wednesday 7 July 2027, parents and carers will be invited to attend our Transition Evening. This event offers an opportunity to meet the Executive Headteacher, Head of Secondary and senior staff, and to find out more about what students can expect when they join us in September.

Additional Transition Support

We recognise that some students may benefit from extra support during the transition process. For students with additional needs, or those joining Appleton Academy as the only pupil from their primary school, we may offer additional transition visits during July where appropriate. These sessions are designed to help students feel confident, supported and ready for a successful start to secondary school life.

Starting Secondary School

The first day of the new academic year is usually reserved exclusively for Year 7 students. This allows them time to settle into their new surroundings, get to know their teachers and classmates, and become familiar with the Academy before the rest of the school returns.

We also normally invite parents and carers to meet their child's form tutor at the end of this first day, providing an opportunity to ask questions and strengthen the partnership between home and school from the very beginning.

We encourage you to explore the website to discover more about Academy life, our curriculum, enrichment opportunities, and the supportive learning environment that awaits your child at Appleton Academy.

Once you have accepted your place at Appleton we will ask that you download our arbor app and all communication we send you will be through the app.

Reading & Transition Day

At Appleton Academy, reading is at the heart of our school.  Our library and wonderful librarian are central to our work. As such, each department has also included a wider reading list to engage pupils with their subjects and we would ask that you encourage your child to read as much as possible between now and September.

SEN

For parents who have children who will be accessing our SEN provision, there is further information about the SEN Team in this booklet – click link: SEN Team Information Booklet.

We will write to parents of SEN children specifically about their transition to Appleton.

We will contact parents with further details about an SEN Transition Day, which will be provided in addition to the whole school transition day, which your child will also attend. This will provide opportunities for your child to join us at Appleton to meet teachers and current pupils, and familiarise themselves with their new surroundings. This usually takes place in July and we will provide details to your child’s current school about the fun and engaging activities we have planned this year.

We will also host a parents’ and carers evening for parents and carers of new Year 7 pupils, which usually happens on the same day as the Transition Day for your children. We will write to you with further details of the dates and timings in the very near future.

Paying for School Meals

Please read the following important documents about school meals at Appleton Academy. These can be found using the links below or in the important documents section at the bottom of this page. You can also arrange for the Academy to assist you to check your eligibility or help you apply for free school meals by emailing our Parental Involvement Officer, Emily Chesterman: emily.chesterman@appletonacademy.co.uk.

Uniform

We pride ourselves on the smart dress of our pupils and we would ask that you support us in ensuring that children and young people are following the Uniform Policy.

In order to minimise cost, most of our uniform can be purchased in local supermarkets or general clothes stores. The only branded items of uniform that we expect all children and young people to have are a blazer, a tie (which school will provide for ALL Year 7 pupils) and a PE top with the Appleton logo. All other uniform items with a logo are optional.

If pupils wish to wear a jumper in winter it must be worn under the blazer (not instead of) and must be plain navy with no logo. Our uniform policy can be found here: Uniform Policy

Our uniform is available from a number of places, including our local uniform shop who have more details on their website: The Uniform Shop. We also regularly host the sale of uniform on the school site, including during the summer break, and we will write to all parents to let you know when suppliers will be at Appleton to enable you to come and purchase uniform from them if you wish.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Appleton Academy.
